How roulette works

Roulette is a game of pure luck. You bet on where a small ball will stop on a spinning wheel: on one number, a group of numbers, a colour, or odd or even. The more numbers a bet covers, the more often it wins, and the less it pays.

A round, step by step

  1. Place your chipsPut chips on the layout: on a number, on the line between numbers, or in the boxes around the edge. You can make as many bets as you like.
  2. No more betsThe dealer, or the game, closes betting and spins the wheel one way and the ball the other.
  3. The ball landsIt drops into one of the 37 pockets. That number wins, and so does every bet that includes it.
  4. Wins are paidLosing chips are cleared away and winning bets are paid. Then the next round starts.

Inside bets go on the numbers themselves and pay a lot. Outside bets go in the boxes around the edge and win almost half the time.

Every bet costs the same over time on a European wheel, 2.7%, because of the green zero: it is neither red nor black, odd nor even, so outside bets lose on it. No bet is safer than another in the long run.

European, French and American wheels

The wheel decides what the game costs. The American wheel adds a second green pocket, 00, and almost doubles the house edge. The French table uses the European wheel with a kinder rule: if the ball lands on zero, you get half of your even-money bets back (La Partage), or they stay on the table for the next spin (En Prison).
