Cashback bonuses: what to know

How to claim them, and the four or five lines of the terms that decide whether they are worth it.

The terms that decide what it is worth

Wagering
How many times you must bet the bonus or its winnings before you can withdraw. AU$10 at 35x means AU$350 in bets.
Maximum win
A cap on what the bonus can pay out, common on no deposit offers and free spins.
Maximum bet
The largest stake allowed while a bonus is active, usually AU$5. A bigger bet can cost you the bonus.
Time limit
Days you have to use the bonus and finish the wagering. Seven is fair; 48 hours rarely is.
Game weighting
How much each game counts towards wagering. Slots usually count 100%, table and live games 10% or nothing.

Cashback bonuses: the good and the bad

The good

  • Low or no wagering
  • Softens a bad week
  • Works with live games, which most bonuses exclude

The bad

  • Only pays back part of what you lose
  • Caps on the amount
  • It is still a loss: never chase it

Is it legal, and is it taxed?

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 stops operators from offering online casino games, including pokies, to people in Australia. It targets operators, not players, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) blocks many offshore sites. The casinos we list are licensed abroad, not in Australia, so Australian consumer protections don’t apply to them: we name the licence on every casino we list, and explain what it means on casino licences.

Winnings and tax. For recreational players, gambling winnings are generally not taxed in Australia. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Staying in control

Most casinos let you set limits and close your account for a while; each review lists the tools a casino has. Set them up before you need them.

  • Set a deposit limit when you open the account, if the casino has one
  • Decide how long you will play before you start
  • Never chase a loss with a bigger deposit
  • Free, confidential help: the national helpline on 1800 858 858, every day. More ways to stay in control

Questions about cashback bonuses

How is cashback worked out?

As a share of net losses: deposits minus withdrawals and balance over the period. 10% of a AU$200 loss is AU$20.

Does cashback have wagering?

Often none or 1x, which makes it close to cash.

Is cashback worth it?

For regular players, often more than a welcome bonus. It never makes losing worth it.
