Blackjack: how it works

The rules in plain words, with pictures: what the cards are worth, how a round goes, your moves, and the best move for every hand.

How blackjack works

You play against the dealer, not against the other players. You and the dealer both get cards, and whoever ends up closer to 21 wins. Go over 21 and you lose straight away: that is called going bust.

BLACKJACK PAYS 3 TO 2 Dealer must draw to 16 and stand on all 17s K♠♠ 9♥♥7♣♣ AU$10 16 Dealer shows a K: 10 Face-down card Your cards: 9 + 7
A round in progress: the dealer shows a king and keeps one card face down. Your 9 and 7 make 16.

What the cards are worth

2♣♣5♦♦9♠♠2 to 9The number on the card10♥♥J♣♣Q♦♦K♠♠1010, J, Q and KA♥♥1 or 11Ace: whichever helps you
Suits don’t matter in blackjack, only the numbers.

An ace counts as 11, unless that would take you over 21; then it counts as 1. A hand with an ace counted as 11 is called soft: a soft 17, an ace and a 6, can take another card with no risk of going bust.

An ace and a 10, J, Q or K as your first two cards is a blackjack, the best hand in the game. It beats any other 21 and pays more.

A round, step by step

  1. Place your betPut your chips in the betting circle before the cards come out. The table shows its minimum and maximum bet.
  2. Two cards eachYou get two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up and one face down.
  3. Your turnTake more cards, stop, double your bet or split a pair. You can keep taking cards until you stop or go over 21.
  4. The dealer’s turnThe dealer turns over the hidden card and must keep taking cards until reaching 17 or more. The dealer makes no choices: the rules decide every move.
  5. Who winsYou win if you are closer to 21 than the dealer, or if the dealer goes bust. The same total is a push, and you get your bet back.

Your moves

Your turn comes once the cards are dealt. These are your choices, and when each one makes sense.

  • 5♣♣6♦♦K♥♥

    Hit

Take another card. Do it when your total is low and one more card can’t take you over 21, like 11 or less.

  • 10♠♠8♥♥

    Stand

Keep your total and end your turn. Stand on 17 or more, and on 13 to 16 when the dealer shows 2 to 6.

  • 6♣♣5♦♦Q♠♠2×

    Double down

Double your bet and take exactly one more card. Best on 10 or 11, when one card is likely to give you 20 or 21.

  • 8♠♠8♥♥

    Split

Turn a pair into two hands, each with its own bet. Always split aces and eights; never split tens or fives.

  • 10♣♣6♦♦

    Surrender

Give up the hand and get half your bet back. Worth it on 16 against a dealer 9, 10 or ace, where the table allows it.

  • A♠♠

    Insurance

A side bet that the dealer has blackjack, offered when the dealer shows an ace. Skip it: it loses money over time.

Some tables pay only 6 to 5 for a blackjack: AU$12 instead of AU$15 on a AU$10 bet. That small change makes the game about four times more expensive. Play the 3 to 2 tables.

The best move for every hand

Basic strategy is the move that wins most often over time, worked out by computer for every hand against every dealer card. Follow the chart and the house edge drops to about 0.5%. It is allowed at every casino, and you can keep it open while you play.

Tips that make a difference

  • Play tables that pay 3 to 2 for blackjack, never 6 to 5
  • Skip insurance and side bets like Perfect Pairs and 21+3: their house edge is far higher
  • Practise basic strategy in a free demo before you play for money
  • Decide your budget and when you will stop before you sit down

Is it legal, and is it taxed?

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 stops operators from offering online casino games, including pokies, to people in Australia. It targets operators, not players, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) blocks many offshore sites. The casinos we list are licensed abroad, not in Australia, so Australian consumer protections don’t apply to them: we name the licence on every casino we list, and explain what it means on casino licences.

Winnings and tax. For recreational players, gambling winnings are generally not taxed in Australia. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Staying in control

141 of the 147 casinos here let you close your account for a while, and 53 let you set deposit limits. Each review lists the tools a casino has. Set them up before you need them.

  • Set a deposit limit when you open the account, if the casino has one
  • Decide how long you will play before you start
  • Never chase a loss with a bigger deposit
  • Free, confidential help: the national helpline on 1800 858 858, every day. More ways to stay in control

Questions about blackjack

What is the best blackjack strategy?

Basic strategy: a chart of the best move for every hand against every dealer card. It cuts the house edge to about 0.5% and is allowed at every casino.

Is online blackjack rigged?

Not at licensed casinos. RNG tables are tested by independent labs, and live tables use real cards on camera.

What does 3 to 2 mean?

A blackjack pays AU$15 on a AU$10 bet. Tables that pay 6 to 5 pay AU$12, which roughly quadruples the house edge.

Can I count cards online?

Not usefully. RNG games shuffle after every hand, and live tables use several decks and shuffle often.
